What is a Newtonian telescope?A Newtonian telescope uses a system of mirrors to gather light, as opposed to a lens used in many other optics. As the light enters the top of the telescope tube, it is reflected by a primary mirror at the lower end, this is then deflected at a 90 degree angle by a plane mirror out of the side of the tube, and into the focuser and eyepiece.
What is a Dobsonian telescope?A Dobsonian telescope comprises a Newtonian telescope mounted on a Dobsonian mount, as popularized by John Dobson in the 1970s. Using the Alt-Azimuth principal, the telescope can pivot in altitude and rotate in azimuth. This allows for a telescope that can be easily moved when needed to but fixed securely as necessary.
